What Is a Dubplate?
A dubplate is a custom vinyl record, cut one at a time in real time — a format born from necessity and rebellion. The tradition began in 1950s Jamaica, where sound system DJs like King Tubby and Coxsone Dodd clashed using exclusive acetate records to win dances and send political messages the mainstream ignored. These discs were soft, short-lived, and revolutionary — sonic weapons in the streets. Similar resistance appeared in the Soviet Union, where banned Western music was secretly cut onto X-ray film — known as bone music — to evade censorship. Dubplate culture moved globally: into Vietnam during wartime, where bootlegged records carried forbidden soul and funk, and into the Bronx, where pioneers like DJ Kool Herc spun rare cuts and breaks to birth hip-hop. Over time, dubplates evolved into modern lathe-cut vinyl records, now made from harder, more durable plastics like polycarbonate and PETG. They're cut by hand using diamond styli, no molds, no factories — each one a direct physical impression of a sound wave. Dubplates have always been about artist control, originality, and resistance — underground music carved into physical form, untouched by streaming, censorship, or commercial compromise.
